The IT Services team in the School of Biological Sciences supports the work of the school by delivering a wide range of IT services used by its staff, students and visitors.

As an IT Technical Support Apprentice, you will work as an integral part of the team, which is supportive, diverse and busy.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Supporting University of Edinburgh Audio Visual and Teaching rooms.
  • Responding to routine calls passed from the central helpline, following well-defined and documented processes, escalating to senior colleagues in the School IT Team and Information Services as necessary.
  • Finding and fixing routine technical problems and install software on computers.
  • Doing preventative maintenance.
  • Installing and configuring computers and other equipment.
  • Completing training modules as part of the Microsoft Certified Professional programme.
  • Learning how to use their tools and techniques.
  • Keeping our documentation up to date
  • Helping to induct new students, staff and visitors.

Required Skills

  • National 5 or above in English and Maths are required.
  • Good at listening and comfortable with communicating with new people.
  • A methodical and logical approach to problem-solving.
  • A working understanding of IT packages or similar e.g. Excel, Microsoft packages.
  • An awareness of the different types of computers and technologies currently available, and familiarity with Windows PCs.
  • Excellent ability to think logically and pass on information in a clear concise manner, written and verbally.
  • An ability to follow instructions and take direction from colleagues.
  • Enthusiastic, with a willingness to help others, and develop new skills.
  • Hard-working, conscientious, reliable and flexible.
  • Polite, presentable, punctual and organised.
  • A willingness to participate in a Modern Apprentice programme.
