DI is part of the Ministry of Defence (MoD), and we provide intelligence analysis, specialist outputs and advice supporting decision making across all levels of defence and government. At the heart of DI, is the National Centre for Geospatial Intelligence (NCGI). NCGI works in partnership with various agencies to provide the latest intelligence products to customers.

The Technology branch of NCGI (NCGI-T) is one of the enabling teams, providing IT infrastructure, CIS services and project support, enabling NCGI staff to work efficiently with the appropriate resources whilst assuring the delivery of new technology solutions.

Job description:
We are currently looking for someone with a keen interest in the DDaT Profession to join us as a Software Development Technician on our apprentice scheme.

The apprenticeship position is a 23 month fixed term contract moving to the offer of a permanent contract on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

Main Responsibilities include:

  • Following clearly defined requirements to deliver software development activities and products.
  • Accurately report progress against specific metrics throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Identifying and reporting risks and barriers to the your supervisors.
  • Communicate outcomes from development activities to team members and other customers both internal and external
  • Write logical and maintainable software solutions in accordance with specifications in order to meet design requirements and coding standards.
  • Apply security principles and practice to software development tasks. Maintaining appropriate project documentation throughout the software development tasking.
  • Apply appropriate recovery techniques to ensure that the software solution being developed is not lost.
  • Undertake unit testing of solutions, with appropriate levels of test code coverage, to identifying issues and raising to supervisor where required.
  • Participate in the end-to-end testing of software solutions.
  • Support delivery of deployment phases, including trials and final release.
  • Identify the need for a suitable 'bug fix', appropriate to the severity and priority of the issue identified.
  • Practice continuous guided, self-learning to keep up to date with technological developments to improve your skills and professional development.

Person specification:

  • We are looking for an individual who have good organisational skills and is able to communicate effectively with people at various levels.
  • With strong customer service skills and able to prioritise work according to importance.
  • The ideal candidate will be an innovative problem solver able to identify creative solutions to sophisticated issues.

Essential criteria:

  • Experience using Microsoft 365
  • Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of SharePoint administration
  • Experience in customer service
  • All jobs advertised in DI are subject to fair and open competition

Qualifications:
Applicants must provide evidence of qualifications, your CV must demonstrate the following essential criteria otherwise your application will be rejected:

Applicants must have five GCSE's, 4/C or above, including English Language and Maths.

If you already hold a qualification at Level 3 or higher you may still be eligible for this apprenticeship if your current qualification is in a different subject.
