About Health Research Authority:

This role sits within Health Research Authority Digital. The digital directorate is responsible for developing, delivering and supporting complex solutions within the HRA’s portfolio of UK-wide information systems for health and care research. This includes a major programme to build new systems, and to achieve the successful migration and eventual closure of current systems.

About the role:

You will support the delivery and maintenance of Microsoft Azure cloud services. This role involves provisioning resources, monitoring systems, troubleshooting issues, and assisting with cloud migrations. You’ll work closely with senior engineers to ensure secure, reliable, and high-performing cloud infrastructure aligned with government digital standards.

The role is UK-based remote working with occasional travel to HRA regional offices. Occasional travel and overnight stays may be required.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in training sessions and workshops to build foundational knowledge in cloud computing, particularly in platforms like Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365.
  • Study and understand cloud concepts, services, and architecture under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Work towards obtaining relevant cloud certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals).
  • Assist in the setup, configuration, and deployment of cloud resources, such as virtual machines, storage accounts, and networks, under supervision.
  • Learn to use tools like Azure Portal, Azure CLI, and infrastructure as code (IaC) technologies like ARM templates or Terraform/Bicep.
  • Monitor cloud infrastructure and services to ensure optimal performance and uptime.
  • Assist in identifying and troubleshooting basic cloud-related issues, escalating more complex problems to senior engineers.
  • Help in documenting cloud environments, configurations, and processes.
  • Prepare reports on resource usage, performance metrics, and any incidents or issues encountered.
  • Learn about cloud security best practices, including identity management, access control, and data protection.
  • Assist in applying security policies and monitoring compliance with company standards and industry regulations.
  • Begin learning and applying basic scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python) to automate routine tasks and processes.
  • Support the implementation of automated workflows for deploying and managing cloud resources.
  • Regularly seek feedback from mentors and team members to improve skills and performance.
  • Provide administrative support to the Technical Design Authority and Technical Change Advisory Board.

You will need the following skills:

Entry requirements:

  • 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above)
  • Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship is in a similar subject

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week.
