Company Overview

A fantastic opportunity has become available to join the Oil and Pipeline Agency (OPA) as their IT apprentice based at their office at Garelochhead. The Oil and Pipeline Agency are a statutory public corporation, sponsored by the Secretary of State for Defence, formed in 1986 by virtue of the Oil and Pipelines Act 1985. They manage, operate and maintain 6 Naval Oil Fuel Depots and a Petroleum Storage Depot on behalf of the Ministry of Defence.

As an IT Apprentice, you’ll be working closely with the team to provide support to OPA’s internal IT Systems. You must have a keen interest in IT and must be able to work as part of a team. Working closely with internal stakeholders you will need to build strong relationships with users at all levels.

Key Responsibilities

The role will require the user to develop their IT skills across a multi-sited organisation, dealing with up to 180 users at all levels within the organisation. It is expected for you to be self-motivated, efficient and well-organised with a keen eye for detail. We’re looking for you to develop into the role so that, in time, you become the first point of contact for all incoming issues to the Help Desk.

  • Set up Laptops and mobile devices and necessary peripheral devices printers etc.
  • Check computer hardware (SSD, mouses, keyboards etc.) to ensure functionality
  • Install and configure appropriate software and functions according to specifications
  • Creation and deletion of user accounts
  • Provide orientation and guidance to users on how to operate new software and computer equipment
  • Organize and schedule upgrades and maintenance without deterring others from completing their work
  • Perform troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve problems (repair or replace parts, debugging etc.)
  • Update and maintain asset register
  • Liaise with third party software/hardware suppliers or maintenance suppliers as necessary.
  • Resolve and/or escalate issues in a timely fashion.

Apprenticeship programs 

While carrying out your day to day you will also be enrolled onto your SCQF Level 6 IT Professional, the duration of this course is 9-12 months. On completion you will have the option move onto your SCQF Level 8 IT Professional. Within your apprenticeship you will cover areas such as Microsoft windows client, azure and networking. The training you will undergo will put you in a great position to succeed within your role. Gaining these qualifications will be a fantastic kick start to your career, with more knowledge comes more value for your employers.

Required Skills 

  • Able to use a word processing package and simple spreadsheets, e.g. to maintain records of equipment and to log calls to support Desk
  • Able to use email and browse the web.
  • Able to follow straightforward oral and written instructions.
  • Able to maintain inventories of equipment and keep up-to-date and accurate records.
  • Able to identify straightforward solutions to simple problems.
  • Able to communicate straightforward verbal and written information in a clear and accurate manner, e.g. pass on a message, complete a simple form.
  • Able to lift and handle ICT equipment as required, including assisting with receiving and storing deliveries of new equipment.

Additional Information

Entitled to 30 days annual leave plus bank holidays

Progressions in salary: Starting £19,000 progressing to £19,500 at 6 months, £20,000 on completion of year 1, £21,000 on completion of year 2, followed by £22,000 on completion of year 3.
