Overview: 

Consequently, a vacancy exists within the IT team for a Software Developer Apprentice, who will be responsible for helping the company to pursue its short-term goals and to achieve its future growth potential. 

Since this is an apprenticeship position, training will be provided but the post holder will be responsible for managing the full development life cycle for projects (primarily) using Microsoft Access and VBA. He/she will identify, interpret and perform system development work on both new and existing internal software solutions. 

The post holder will be required to demonstrate excellent communication skills and have the ability to discuss issues/development of technical matters with staff members in an intelligible manner free from unnecessary technical jargon. 

Furthermore, the apprentice will need to be able to work either independently or as part of a team in order to identify suitable solutions where necessary. 

We therefore require a person who is approachable, results focus, determined and patient. 

Duties:

The post holder main responsibilities will be to:

  • Train to a level where monitoring of systems allows the individual to provide recommendations for improvements and develop an understanding of system requirements which allows the individual to proactively maintain and improve systems.
  • Manage the full development life cycle (from the user requirement stage to user acceptance testing) for projects using VBA and Access.
  • Interpret functional specifications and perform system development work.
  • Develop and modify applications using Access & VBA. 

What we are looking for:

Necessary skills the post holder will need to possess:

  • The ability to be trained to design, develop, manage and maintain software solutions using Microsoft Access with VBA
  • The ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • The ability to understand and translate requirements into specifications
  • The ability to write user manuals and release documentation 

Entry requirements: 

  • 5 GCSE’s [especially English, Mathematics and a science or technology subject]
  • Other relevant qualifications and experience
  • Or an aptitude test with a focus on IT skills

You must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level than this apprenticeship in a similar subject. 

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme. 

If you hold international equivalents of the above qualifications, at the time of your application you must be able to provide an official document that states how your international qualifications compare to the UK qualifications.

Future prospects:

92% of QA Apprentices secure permanent employment after finishing their apprenticeship. Additionally, there may be opportunities to undertake further apprenticeship training as many of our programs offer on-going development tracks.
